Doug, myself, Alan and Mandy left Cardigan to start our journey to Dar es Salaam after our church family had prayed a blessing on us all and promised to keep us in their prayers over the next couple of weeks. We travelled down to the airport and stayed overnight in a hotel ready to fly at 6 a.m. the next morning.

There was an air of expectation, excitement and nervousness about what lay ahead. We knew we had three flights in front of us, the first to Amsterdam, then Mount Kilimanjaro then down to Dar es Salaam. The flights were long but good and we finally arrived at 10.30 p.m. to a very warm welcome from some of the pastors we would be seeing over the next few days.

Not only was the welcome warm but also the air around us, which was very different from the climate we had just left. Three of us had been here once before but for Mandy it was her first visit. So the sights and smells were new to her; to the rest of us it brought back a lot of memories. When we arrived at the hotel the rooms we had booked were occupied and we couldn’t have them until the following day, so they put us into two suites of rooms. They were beautiful and nothing like the basic rooms we had arranged. So we enjoyed the views from our living rooms out over the harbour and the city and thanked the Lord for His care for us. They then let us keep the rooms for the rest of our stay. What a blessing.

We had to be out early the next morning to travel to a church near the airport. We were woken early by the church across the road. They started worship at 6 a.m. every morning. It was much better than any alarm clock we have here.

Nathanael picked us up in what was to be our transport for the next two weeks, a rather old mini bus with air conditioning that worked occasionally and curtains that were hanging off the rails and, as we found out that first morning, the mosquitoes like to sleep there. Mandy was the best at squashing them.

We met Pastor Alan, whose church we were visiting, along the way. He told us that we had to go and sign a visitors book in the area office. Because of the elections that were taking place they had to know who was in the area. This was a first for us and didn’t know what kind of reception we would get. But as we met the District Commissioner of that area he was very welcoming, even if his English was limited. We signed the book and then were asked to pray for him, and as we did that we also gave him words of prophecy that the Lord was giving to us. I commented to Mandy that there was a real anointing for the prophetic to be released.

Pastor Alan then took us to his office, a tiny building with three rooms. One where there were two sewing machines, and he told us they were training the widows to make a living for themselves. He also had a room with a computer in it and there they were training orphans a skill. We went into another tiny room which was his office and we prayed a blessing on him and the work he was doing there.

I had a picture of an oasis and a desert and felt that he represented the oasis and the people around the desert. Many would come to drink the living waters of Jesus from this man. We found out later that this was a Muslim area and ninety per cent of the people were Muslims.

We went on to his church, which was down a sloping hill of loose dirt and stones. There we met his wife and a small congregation of people. There were some children there and some dressed in pink material. We were told that these were orphans. Pastor Alan and his wife care for sixty orphans and lots of widows. We worshipped and then shared about the love of Jesus. Eleven people gave their lives to Jesus, some of whom we think were Muslims.

Next we had lunch. By this time the place was packed and there must have been eighty to ninety children. Pastor Alan told us that they feed them all and there are still queues outside for more. Then they gave all the widows clothes. They are amazing people. From the little they have they give it away to those who have less. We felt very privileged to be in this place and, just for a day, to be part of what the Lord was doing here. In the afternoon I shared a story about being part of the winning team and did it using an illustration of two teams, one being on the field playing and the other one just watching and planning what they would do if ever they got the ball. I said that this is true of the Christian life. We are the ones playing the opposing team. The demonic can only plan what they will do if we listen to them. What I didn’t know was that Pastor Alan had planned to give out tracts that day with this exact story on it. He was very excited and, I must say, so were we, when we realised what was happening. We finished the day by giving the tracts and Bibles to the new converts and prayed a blessing over the whole church. We then went to Pastor Alan’s house where we prayed a blessing over his home and family.

The next day saw the start of the Pastors and Bishops conference being held in Pastor Marco’s church. We arrived in the middle of worship and prayer. Then at 10 a.m. Nathanael said that it was our turn to bring the teaching and we would finish at 1 p.m. I did two sessions that day on church history and what season we are in today. Then we had lunch in Pastor Marco’s house, which took a couple of hours.

We were told that the next meeting for the church would start at 3 p.m. It eventually started at about 4.30 p.m. The worship was awesome and the Presence of God was wonderful. I preached again and another eight people gave their lives to the Lord. We then prayed for the sick and eventually left at about 7 p.m., by which time it was dark. Days are very predictable in Dar es Salaam. It gets light at 6.30 a.m. and goes dark at 6.30 p.m.

This day set the pattern for the next four days and we had an amazing time. Doug would lead worship and I would preach for about one and a half hours. Alan and Mandy would then share and we would all pray and prophesy with people in the morning and then minister to the church in the evening.

One of the things which stood out for us was that on the Friday the people at the conference had been asked to give testimonies. We were amazed at what they shared. Two years ago, when we were there last, we gave some prophecies to the churches and they testified over what had happened through these prophecies. Pastor Marco had received a prophecy from Isaiah about extending his territory and moving his tent pegs. He told us how he had taken that to be a word from God and so he sold his house and bought two small building on the edge of the property of the church. Then he was offered a job doing the electrical work for a radio station. With the money he earned he has bought a large piece of land next to the church land to extend the work they are doing. He now has a house next to the church property as well and he said that it all came from the prophecy he received.

Pastor John testified that he had been given words as well. Janet told him to take care of the children – so he has started a training school for people who want to work with children. He has 250 students training at the moment. He was also told he would extend his influence in the area. The building he met in, which was only a few sticks and a tin roof, belonged to a Muslim, as did the land surrounding the church building. This Muslim went to him and asked if he wanted to buy the building and land because he was willing to sell it to him. Pastor John didn’t have any money but had received a word from us that he shouldn’t look to man for his provision but to God. He took this word and started to fast and pray. Then a lady went to him and said that she had sold her house and wanted to sow the money into his ministry. She gave him the money and paid for the building and the land.

Nathanae’ls mother stood and told us about the prophecies they had received and how her soap making business was doing very well. She said that the young men we had prophesied over had become pastors.

Another lady stood and testified how she had been healed through the teaching that morning, which had been on forgiveness – and as she took this teaching and forgave people her body was healed.

Another lady said that the Lord had shown her how she was to sell her house and put the money into Christian work.

There were many other testimonies and they kept saying that it was because of us. I told them that it wasn’t. We were only the messengers and it was how they received the words that made the difference. It was their faith and faithfulness which had brought those prophecies into being. It challenged us over what we do with words that are given.

The conference finished at lunchtime Saturday and many of the people there blessed us with gifts of cloth, oranges, coconuts, eggs – and even a live chicken.

We finished the Saturday night meeting with a ‘fire tunnel’ – something completely new to them, but they all joined in and it was a blessed time.

We were scheduled to speak in two churches on the Sunday. The first one was beyond the airport and when we arrived it was in the middle of the most amazing worship. The children were totally engaged in the worship and dance. It was brilliant. We all introduced ourselves then Doug sang over them and I preached. After this we prayed with a lot of people and then prayed for the sick. We saw miracles in that place – legs growing, people being healed of different things. One lady was manifesting demons and she was delivered. We went back to the pastor’s house for lunch and many people came. It was a good time of fellowship. We prayed for them all and prophesied over them before leaving for Pastor John’s church.

We were excited about going back there as we had visited it about three times on our previous visit. Mandy was shocked by what she saw – a rubbish tip with razor blades all over the place, and children running over it in their bare feet. Life in these slums is very challenging for those who live there and it makes us realise just how much we have and how well cared for we are. The scripture comes to my mind about when Jesus said how much easier it was for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. It’s in places like this that we realise what he meant. Doug, myself and Alan were excited to see the people we had met last time we were here – wonderful people with welcoming, warm hearts. We worshipped, Alan and Mandy prayed a blessing on them and then Doug sang and I spoke.

Later we prayed for the sick again – and for nearly everyone in the church. Then we went back to a man’s house, the man used to be a Muslim, his wife was sick with Malaria so we prayed for her and then for them both – as a couple. We had a blessed time of fellowship with the folks there, and then left in the dark to travel back to the hotel – the sounds of children shouting, “You are welcome in Tanzania” in our ears.

Monday was a day off. Doug and Alan went on a short sightseeing tour and Mandy and I prepared for the rest of the week. It was good to have this day.

Tuesday we went to Kigamboni, once again travelling on the ferry across the river. As we turned the corner into the area where Nathanael’s mother and father lived and had a church, we saw again the rubbish tip where we held the outreach two years previously. Mandy was quite disturbed by it. We had been there for nearly a week on our previous trip and it didn’t shock us in the same way this time. It’s amazing how we get used to things. We pray that our hearts will never be hardened to the hardship these people experience every day of their lives.

Our meeting was outside under a large mango tree – thousands of ants running over it and everything else. Again we all ministered to them. I gave the word and then we prayed for the sick. One lady was very ill with TB. We then prophesied over everyone. It was a good time.

We left there and went to show Mandy the hotel we had stayed at last time we were there. It was still as beautiful as we remembered – white sand and turquoise sea. We had lunch there and even met the waiter who was there last time. He also had a testimony that since Doug had prophesied over him his life had turned around for the better. We were just amazed by these people who took the word of God so seriously and pressed in for the release of that word until it came into being. They were teaching us a lot.

We then went on to Pastor Fabien’s church. We had to walk quite a long way to get there, through narrow lanes and then down a very narrow and steep hill. It had the remains of houses that had collapsed and we had to climb over the rubble. At the bottom of this hill was a low wall and on the other side was Pastor Fabien’s church and house. It was basically a small yard with a pig sty off it, and a small house at the back. But the welcome we received was overwhelming. These are the most precious and loving people we have ever met.

The night started with a few people under a small tin roof while we sat on the opposite side of the yard. Doug sang a couple of songs and taught a song to the children. People started to fill the alleyways outside the building and watch what was going on. Pastor Fabien told is that the majority of the people were Muslims. When it came time for me to preach I knew what I wanted to say. I wanted the people to know the real truth of who Jesus is. It was a very difficult time – everything was coming against the word – noise, distractions, equipment failure – all kinds of things, but I knew that I just had to keep going with the message. Peter, who was translating for me was marvellous and we just kept going. At the end I made an appeal for salvation and about thirty adults and children in the meeting came forward. There were many on the streets as well but someone chased them away. One of the blessings for Fabien was that his uncle got saved in that meeting.

We praise the Lord that He is the Saviour and it’s His Holy Spirit that brings conviction. We also prayed for a lot of sick people and one man was delivered of demons. It was going dark by this time but the children wanted to dance for us. They danced in the dirt and stones and I have never seen anyone dance like these little children. They put everything into it and were amazing. I would love our children here to see how they worship God.

It was a precious night and we finished it by having a meal with the pastor and his wife. I will always remember that night – for me it was very special.

The next day saw the last of our visits to the churches and we started in Pastor Raymond’s church. It wasn’t on the schedule originally, but he wanted us to visit him and we were very happy to do so. We again joined their worship, then Alan and Mandy greeted everyone and Doug led in worship. Mandy gave a word on the compassion of Jesus and I followed it with a prophetic word for the church. We prayed for all the sick and then prophesied over some folks before leaving for the last church.

We went about an hour’s journey out of Dar es Salaam into the region of Chanika. Many asked about snakes on the way and we were assured that there were lots of them (something I’d rather not have known), but we were told that they stayed in the trees during the day.

We met the pastor and then went on to a doctor’s house where we had lunch. Then they took the seats outside and sat us under the trees. Scripture comes in very handy in situations like these, especially Psalm 91, where we have the authority to tread on snakes and scorpions – which was another creature we were told were around. We then went on to the church and again joined the worship. Alan and Mandy greeted the church, Doug sang a song and I gave them a prophetic word and a teaching. The response was fantastic and we finished up praying for the sick, including the doctor, who was healed, and his brother, a pastor, whose leg grew and he got very excited because his back was healed. Lots of other healings followed. We were given this testimony later: a lady had come to the church but wouldn’t come inside. She sat outside at the back. She was two weeks overdue to have her baby and they had told her that she needed an operation. She believed that if she came to the meeting and came for prayer when we called people forward, she would receive her healing by faith. As soon as the meeting finished she was taken to the hospital where she have birth to a healthy baby boy – and she did this naturally. Praise the Lord.

We then headed back to the hotel. The next day would be our last and we had arranged to visit a secondary school where Mandy would speak with them and then have lunch with Nathanael. The next morning Mandy was not very well, but had been so looking forward to visiting the school that she still wanted to go.

We met with the headmaster when we arrived and he welcomed us officially and we signed the visitors book. He told us that the school had 1450 children and twenty-eight teachers, but nine of them were still in training. He then took us to meet eighteen members of staff – we introduced ourselves to one another and then went to sit in on an English class. The children in this school are part of the sixty per cent of children who go on to secondary education. Children have to pass an exam at the age of 11, and if they fail there is no more education. But if they pass they will go into a school such as the one we were in.

One member of staff worked in the IT department but said that they only had two computers for the whole of the school.

We sat in a class of about eighty-one pupils learning English. They had no books or anything, but just listened to the teacher. He was excellent and used an old blackboard and chalk to teach his lesson. The class was very enthusiastic to learn – they know that if they don’t get good results there is no future for them. We then went on to the science lab, which only had three pieces of equipment. Nine students conducted three experiments using the equipment. They were very good and we were impressed with them.

Mandy had to return to the hotel as she was feeling very ill. I asked if I should go with her but she wanted me to stay and do the bit she was going to do. This was all very well, but I hadn’t a clue what that was. Alan and I decided we would just go with the flow and see what happened. Next the whole school was gathered in the yard, in the baking sunshine, and we were welcomed again by the headmaster. We responded to his greeting, blessed the children, gave the gifts we had brought and then went back to the staff room. We felt we had made some good friends there that day. Mandy’s school here in Cardigan is going to do some fundraising to help them.

We went back to Nathanael’s house for lunch. We were surprised to see that all the pastors whose churches we had visited – plus some more – had gathered there. They gave testimonies of how blessed they had been by our visit. Doug went round the room and asked them their denominations. Every one of them came from a different denomination. We spoke Psalm 133 over them because their unity during our stay was inspiring. Each one wanted us to go back and spend four days in their church. They were hungry for the word of God and wanted their people to be taught. It was an overwhelming experience which made us feel very inadequate and humble.

I could share so much more – but it would be best if you all go and experience it for yourselves.

I think I can honestly speak for each one of us – our lives will never be the same again – and that’s a good thing. We are praying and asking the Lord, “What next?”. Although we have returned to Wales – a part of us will remain in that nation, with the people that so welcomed us and inspired us with their love for the Lord and their trust and faith in Him.
